What is β-Caryophyllene?
β-Caryophyllene (pronounced “beta kary-O-fy-leen”) is found in many plants including basil, cloves, and black pepper. It has a rich and spicy aroma.
Research has shown that beta caryophyllene is the only terpene known to interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, through interaction with non-psychotropic CB2 receptors.
Beta caryophyllene is known to be anti-septic, anti-bacterial, antifungal, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory. Beta caryophyllene acts as a local anesthetic, and may provide pain relief topically in creams and ointments. Additionally, it may help relieve pain by releasing the same endorphins morphine does.
It has been shown to enhance the effects of morphine and thus is promising as a means of reducing the needed dose of the opioid.
Dancing Goat Gardens features flowers and products with the terpene β-Caryophyllene.
What is a terpene?
Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds, produced by a variety of cannabis strains. They often have a strong odor and may protect the plants that produce them by deterring herbivores and by attracting predators and parasites of herbivores.
